Abstract
This document specifies a method for the determination of the intrinsic biodegradability of post-consumer waste of tobacco containing cigarettes with filters in marine environments without any preliminary environmental exposure or pre-treatment, simulating the biodegradation processes which take place in marine environments. This document neither determines the constituents, such as regulated metals or substances hazardous to the environment, nor potential ecotoxic effects of the post-consumer waste of tobacco containing cigarettes with filters but intrinsic biodegradability only. These aspects will be considered in a separate standard test method on the determination of the overall environmental impact of post-consumer waste of tobacco containing cigarettes with filters accidentally released in the marine environment. This document does also not cover the determination of the fragmentation of post-consumer waste of tobacco containing cigarettes with filters accidentally released in the marine environment. The physical degradation of a product or material in a specific environment depends on the local conditions and characteristics of the product or material (e.g. thickness, shape, etc.). This aspect will be considered in a separate standard test method on the determination of the disintegration of post-consumer waste of tobacco containing cigarettes with filters accidentally released in the marine environment. This document does not contain any labelling requirements. This document applies to post-consumer waste of tobacco containing cigarettes with filters for smoking only and does not apply to smokeless and/or heated tobacco products (e.g. snus, THP consumable sticks, etc.). While tobacco containing cigarettes with filters for smoking are all relatively similar in structure (tobacco, filter, paper) heated tobacco products are characterized by a relatively large variety in structure. Furthermore, as an important part of this document is standardizing the (physical) form under which the materials need to be tested and both types of tobacco products would require a different preparation method, it was decided to limit the scope to post-consumer waste of tobacco containing cigarettes with filters for smoking only, excluding heated tobacco products for the time being. In a later stage a similar standard test method could be developed covering heated tobacco products. This document does not cover the certification of post-consumer waste of tobacco containing cigarettes with filters.
